Organized in 1970, the NMTA is a very active club, holding about 15 trials per year in areas ranging from the scrublands of Roswell, NM to the 10,000' peaks of Sipapu and Taos ski areas. Typical events draw from 45to 70 riders of all skill levels. We have 8 classes (plus Junior) and run split days -- the 'lower' classes ride in the morning, and the 'upper' classes ride in the afternoon. The two divisions score for each other, with the upper-class riders offering abundant advice and encouragement to those who are less skilled. The club does a lot of camping, and holds a number of 2-day events. We ride on a trials-only designated BLM area at San Ysidro, NM, which offers a thousand acres of grippy rocks. We also ride at Haystack Mountain, another BLM riding area near Roswell, NM, and at Forest Service sites in the northern mountains. We are also blessed by having permission to hold trials at Sipapu Ski Area (near Taos) and at Taos Ski Valley (where rounds 7 & 8 of the NATC Championships were held in August of 2001). We have a total of about 125 riders from New Mexico, and 15 that occasionally join us from out-of-state. We have about 35 different trialsmasters, with various club members taking a turn. Classes are: Rules: The 2007 NMTA Rulebook is here (pdf). We generally follow the AMA, NATC, and FIM.... links to the national rules and some scoring-tutorial web sites are found on our links page. Times: We usually run the 'lower' classes in the morning, take a lunch break, then run the 'uppers' in the afternoon. Each division scores for the other. Signup is usually at 8:00 - 9:00, riding starts at 9:00. Fees take care of club and event expenses, with some going towards our Land
Fund. First time rider's fee is waived only if it is the first trials of any sort at any place at ever. The first time free concept is to help mitigate the $39 for AMA membership. AMA: Everyone must be an AMA member in order to compete, no exceptions. Membership: To defray newsletter and other administrative expenses, yearly membership is $15 per family. Dues are usually paid at the yearly banquet (Jan.) but can most certainly be sent to the treasurer (see below). Internet/email groups have been set up on Yahoo. This includes a discussion group, an event cancellation system and an email link to provide input to the Board. Spark arrestors are absolutely mandatory. If you don't have one on your bike you do not ride. This is true at all NMTA events. No exceptions. Hammer will be the Enforcer. If you are caught riding an event without one, you are disqualified.
