Santa Fe National Forest Travel Management Plan Details

On Monday August 9, 2010 the SFNF Office will start taking official public comment on the Travel Management Plan. According to a contact with the Santa Fe office, alternative 1 of the Travel Management Plan will NOT be considered a viable option due to federal constraints beyond their control. Alternative 1 is in place to allow the public a reference for the current Travel Management Plan. Please read the Travel Management Plan and call the SFNF office at (505) 438-5443. Make sure to leave your information and your support for one of the plans (2-5).

What this means:

The forest service will be shutting down unrestricted motorized cross country travel.

The least loss option is alternative 4, but it may not be the best long term option.

Alternative 3 means the most restrictive options.

Alternative 5 is "Expected to reduce conflicts the most because it also groups motorized activities geographically." This means that they would segment the forest areas into motorized and non-motorized use areas.
